What is The Next Step?
The Next Step is an exciting series of events that takes place at unique venues in the Lower Mainland and features some of our most notable grads. The Next Step: Defining Your Style
On October 22, 2009, UBC alumni packed the Banana Republic store on Robson Street for The Next Step: Defining Your Style. Fashion columnist JJ Lee, MArch'00, and broadcaster, comedian and filmmaker Tetsuro Shigematsu entertained the crowd while providing fantastic fashion advice to all the recent grads in attendance. Some of their tips:
- Mixing patterns is acceptable but be sure to change up the scale of the patterns too. For example, wear big stripes with small checkers or vice versa.
- Always select professional looking clothes that are easy to care for. For women, a pair of black pants is a must.
- Your suit and tie should draw people's focus to your face, not to your clothes.
- When building your wardrobe, emphasize separates over suits. They provide greater versatility.
- Always keep a back-up tie in your desk.
- If you're all leg, be sure to bring your hemline down.
