How to Volunteer

Committee vacancies are filled by the committee Chair in consultation with the Governance Committee. With the exception of the Executive Committee, volunteers need not be members of the Board of Directors. If you would like to be considered for a committee position, please check CareersOnline for current vacancies and to submit a CV and statement of intent.

Achievement Awards Committee

The Awards Committee oversees the development of and implementation of an awards program that recognizes outstanding graduates and other members of the UBC community through the presentation of awards at the annual Alumni Achievement Awards.  This provides an opportunity to honor recipients by their peers and provide public recognition of their achievements.

The Awards Committee also works actively to promote, support and celebrate the achievements of UBC Alumni through nominations for other awards in the local, national and international community.

Community & Government Engagement Committee

The Community & Government Engagement Committee will develop a strategy to influence government decision- making on post secondary support and other issues of concern to alumni.

Audit & Finance Committee

The Audit & Finance Committees recently merged under the revisions to the bylaws on September 7, 2010. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the purpose of this committee is to oversee the financial affairs of the Alumni Affairs (comprise of Alumni Association and Alumni Relations Unit) and the implementation of financial and accounting policies and procedures consistent with the purpose of the Alumni Affairs. As well, the committee is to ensure an effective external financial auditing process and the credibility and objectivity of the financial reports.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee may exercise all of the powers of the Board of Directors when the Board is not in session.  It also oversees the operation of the Association and implements policies and procedures consistent with the purpose of the Association. This committee is for board members only.

Governance Committee

These volunteers work on establishing guidelines for the Governance of the UBC Alumni Association. Its purpose is to:

  • Bring highest caliber volunteer leadership to UBC through Alumni representation
  • Build robust database of leadership volunteers
  • Recruit suitable candidates for the Alumni Association Board of Directors and committee chairpersons and consult with committee chairs regarding committee volunteers
  • Make recommendations on board policies and governance procedures
  • Nominate candidates for appointment by the government to the University Board of Governors and recommend alumni, as members of the University convocation, and nominate a candidate for the position of Chancellor

Communications Committee

The Committee is responsible for maintaining a strong alumni voice in communications vehicles produced by Alumni Affairs, and helps interpret the strategic vision of the Board of Directors as it pertains to communications.

Alumni Centre Committees

Alumni Centre Building Committee

The Alumni Centre Committee is comprised of two sub-committees: the Fundraising Sub-Committee and the Building Sub-Committee.

The UBC Alumni Centre Building Sub-Committee will work with staff to oversee the creation of the UBC Alumni Centre.  This sub-committee, will ensure that UBC’s Alumni receive the best possible centre through bringing its members’ time, talent and treasure to the project.

Alumni Centre Fundraising Committee

The Alumni Centre Fundraising Committee is in its preliminary stages, with terms of reference and committee membership still to be finalized.
