Valerie Casselton has served on the alumni UBC board of directors since 2013 and, prior to that, was a member of the alumni UBC Advisory Council. As a board director she has chaired the Achievement Awards Committee and had a seat on the Trek advisory committee. She has been a UBC mentor and tri-mentor for more than 20 years.
Valerie is the managing editor of The Vancouver Sun and The Province, with responsibilities for news gathering and administration of both papers. She works with the management team on initiatives related to the strategic planning of PNG and Postmedia, whose publications have a national reach of 2.1 million readers daily on four platforms including smart phone, tablet, desktop and newspapers.
Valerie is on the Women’s Leadership Circle of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, and is the past chair of the Langara College Journalism School Advisory Board, past chair of the Pacific Press Credit Union/Pacific Paper Industry Credit Union, and past chair of the GVFHC. She has been on the boards of the Centre for Investigative Journalism (now the Canadian Association of Journalists), The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, and The Vancouver Biennale. A UBC graduate with a BA (hons) in English, Valerie also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Carleton University, and a CHRP designation (Certified Human Resources Professional).
