UBC is pleased to present the Strings for Peace World Premiere
Amjad Ali Khan is the undisputed master of the sarod, and one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians. His ancestors developed and shaped the beautiful nineteen stringed instrument, and his richly talented sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash are the seventh generation of the family to play it.
In this rare concert, the first family of the sarod comes together with three-time Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist Sharon Isbin. Hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time”, Isbin has performed as a soloist with over 200 orchestras and is the Director of the guitar department at the prestigious Julliard School (a department she created in 1989).
Isbin and the Khans bring together two worlds that are often held to be radically different. They preserve the essence of both traditions, creating ways for them to flow into each other without artistic compromise. Presenting a range of music, from Spanish work for guitar to ragas and folk tunes, these outstanding musicians make an eloquent and impassioned call for harmony – in music, in religions, in cultures, and in the world.
Each of these artists could command a concert hall in their own right. They come together for this special collaboration which sees its world premiere at Indian Summer Festival.
This event is produced with the support of UBC Department of Asian Studies.
About the Indian Summer Festival

The festival centres and amplifies the voices of South Asian artists in conversation with their local and global artistic counterparts. Programming includes literary panels and discussions, music concerts, visual arts exhibitions/installations, and workshops.
